Utilities Technician

The successful Utilities Technician will possess strong mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and HVAC experience and education. In addition, the technician will have extensive knowledge of troubleshooting techniques, electronics, building controls and computer skills. An awareness and understanding of local, state, and federal safety and environment regulations required to safely operate all utility systems and equipment associated with the entire Sumter plant, including the powerhouse building, central media building and associated site utility support equipment.

Core Responsibilities

  • Maintain and operate chillers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, chilled and process water pumps, valves, controllers, sensors, and distribution piping and water treatment testing procedures.
  • Maintain and operate steam boilers, hot water boilers, feed water pumps, deaerator tank, RO system, hot water pumps, valves, controllers and sensors, and distribution piping up to drop points for individual equipment in the plant. In addition, understand natural gas delivery systems.
  • Maintain and operate air compressors, air dryers, automatic control systems, oil/water separators, valves, controllers and sensors, and distribution piping up to drop points for individual equipment in the plant.
  • Maintain and monitor plant medium voltage distribution involving 13,800V, 4160V, and 480 voltage along with distribution transformers, bus tie switches, load centers, and breakers, meters and monitoring software. Understanding of 480V 3 phase electrical systems and wiring. Ability to measure and troubleshoot basic low voltage wiring circuits and control wiring circuits. In addition, basic knowledge of Variable Speed Drives (VSD) and motor control centers.
  • Maintain and perform equipment PM’s on fire pumps, jockey pumps, emergency generators, capable of resetting and disable/enable fire alarm points. Understand NFPA and insurance company required testing procedures and data collection. In addition, work with and support sprinkler and fire alarm contractors.
  • Use of maintenance PM work order system in SAP. Perform predictive maintenance tasks such as compressed air leak detection; lube oil analysis and trending, vibration analysis and trending and daily equipment logging. Understand basic concepts of Total Plant Maintenance (TPM).
  • Johnson Controls Metasys Building Automation System  (Introduction Level)
  • Ability to use BAS computer to view graphics and alarms in the plant
  • Locations of controllers, sensors, field controllers, and systems served
  • JCI Metasys Controller system architecture and data communication
  • Basic understanding of digital inputs/outputs and analog inputs/outputs
  • Data monitoring, extraction, and reports for all systems and plant areas
  • Maintain and operate both chilled/hot water air handlers, direct expansion units, fan coil units, heat pumps, VAV boxes and exhaust fans along with associated valves, controllers and sensors.  This does not include small refrigeration systems on production equipment.
  • Alertness/Safety, Arc Flash Electrical Safety
  • Understand and work with Total Plant Maintenance (TPM) and Lean Manufacturing concepts and Building Management Systems (BAS) and energy monitoring systems
  • Follow all plant and environmental policies as well as plant and departmental safety policies
  • Follow the internal ESH work instructions in the daily work
  • Demonstrate exemplary personal behavior in ESH and motivate others
  • Ensure immediate notification and response, and initiate preventive measures in case of unsafe or polluting hazards
  • Perform other duties as directed by the Utilities Supervisor or Department Manager

Basic Qualifications

  • AAS degree is Mechatronics or Electrical, Mechanical, or Industrial Maintenance OR five or more years work experience in industrial maintenance
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Ability to read and interpret prints and schematics
  • Ability to use lift equipment (Fork Lifts, Scissor Lifts, Man Lifts, etc.)
  • Equipment  (Boilers, Air Compressors, Chillers, Air Handlers, Vacuum Pumps)
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening

Preferred Qualifications

  • Desired 3 years experience in an Utility operations and plant maintenance.
